Seeking a piano (in the Highland Park, IL. area)?

This Yamaha U3 (1972 vintage) Is Better than Most Baby Grands - Here's Why:

NOTE: Picture is of another U3 of the same vintage and style.

• Because of its very tall cabinet (51.5 inches) the U3 offers extra-long strings, producing a richer, warmer sound than uprights. (Technical explanation: longer strings mean the "partial" overtones adhere more closely to the whole-integer harmonic series. This yields a more grand-like beauty and purity of sound. Don't settle for a smaller length, whether upright or "grand")

• Also important to the excellent sound is the use of very hard wood. For the U3, Yamaha uses spruce (rare on an upright) and hard maple - both with excellent strength-to-weight ratios. Yamaha seasoned the wood specifically for the US Midwest

• Solid copper-wound bass strings contribute to the richer sound.

• The (hardwood-based) action on this piano is unusually responsive to touch and sensitive to coloration. This is rare on an upright.

CONDITION: Excellent. The piano has been kept in climate-controlled conditions; it has been regularly tuned and regulated. It has been played infrequently enough to have essentially no wear (but often enough to keep it in excellent condition). Felt of hammers is very fine, not at all worn out. Original owner; purchased new from Chicago dealer who imported it from Japan.Serial number: G 1351270 (1972)

ASKING PRICE: just $3,799. (worth $4500*)

Yamaha is the world's largest maker of musical instruments, and made its first piano in 1900. Among those to favor Yamaha grands were Sviatoslav Richter and (for his 1981 Goldberg Variations) Glenn Gould. Current Yamaha artists include Maria Joao Pires, Frederick Chiu, Abbey Simon, and Michael Tilson Thomas. Remember that high-quality uprights are usually better than baby grands.

* According to http://www.promenademusic.co.uk/news.asp?resourceid=34, U3s of this vintage are worth £2700 - which is $5300 in US dollars! Our piano tuner prices ours at $4500 because of its excellent condition. We are asking a lot less given the economy.
